2023: Ockie Strydom

The inaugural edition of the Singapore Classic represented the first DP World Tour event held in the nation since 2014. One man who will be hoping for less of a gap to the next tournament in Singapore is South African Ockie Strydom. As recently as December 2022, Strydom was without a DP World Tour win to his name. Having got that monkey off his back with success in the Alfred Dunhill Championships, Styrdom doubled his tally with this fine success at the Laguna National.

Four shots adrift of leaders Alejandro Del Rey and Jeunghun Wang headed into the final round, Strydom found his groove in spectacular style to produce a barrage of birdies on the closing Sunday. Posting a final round of 63 – the lowest score of any player over the four days – Strydom came home one clear of the field for his second win in his previous six starts.

Not that the win looked particularly likely early in the day, with Del Rey flying out of the traps to birdie each of the first three holes. However, a double bogey at the sixth seemed to derail his momentum somewhat. Sami Välimäki was the next to make a charge, firing six birdies over the first 10 holes to move three shots clear. The run of the Finn cooled from that point, whilst Strydom continued to chip away.

One down with three to play, the 38 year old birdied the 16th, before producing a remarkable chip and run to leave himself only a couple of feet for birdie at the last. He didn’t miss, leaving Välimäki needing a birdie at the final hole to force a playoff. A fluffed approach from the Finn all but sealed the deal, as Strydom held on with an excellent score of -19 for a one-shot win.

Sami Välimäki’s solid season continued with a runners-up finish, whilst Alejandro Del Rey, Marcel Schneider and Jeunghun Wang finished three back in a tie for third.
